Tesla’s Robotaxis Are Arriving in Phoenix—What You Should Know

Tesla's Robotaxis

Get ready Phoenix; Tesla is looking to deploy its Tesla’s Robotaxis in your area. After Tesla’s Electric cars tested the self-driving taxi’s in Austin, it is now looking to expand to Arizona, which could be the next big hub for the company.

The Scoop on Tesla’s Robotaxis Plans

As per the most recent update from the Arizona Department of Transportation,

• Tesla has commenced the application process as of June 26.

• They intend to start with a proprietary safety driver in the vehicle.

• A later phase will include fully autonomous systems.

• A verdict could be issued as early as the start of August.

Implications of This Development in Arizona

Picture this scenario, you’re on your way to Sky Harbor Airport, and instead of ordering an Uber, a Tesla without a driver pulls up to pick you up. That reality is in the near future. Before getting excited, consider the following:

Currently, the technology is in the testing phase and not yet fully operational for the general public.

All safety regulations need to be adhered to.

Initial discussions are being held with the local law enforcement and other relevant stakeholders.

The Race to Launch a Fully Autonomous Taxi Service

Autonomous Taxi Service

While Tesla is yet to release their autonomous vehicle, competitor Waymo has fully autonomous vehicles already operating in Phoenix. Here is a comparison:

Waymo’s Current Service:

Covers an area of 315 square miles in the metro Phoenix area.

Serves as a transport for teenagers with parental consent.

Accessible from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport.

Tesla’s Plans:

  • Will begin with a limited test fleet.
  • Will extend operations from Austin to Tesla’s Robotaxis.
  • Must secure public operating authorization.

What other news is there?

While Elon Musk anticipates the release of Tesla Tesla’s Robotaxis in California in the near future, Arizona could be the front runner.

The overarching query is this – to what extent will Phoenix welcome autonomous taxis in the same manner they have with Waymo?

According to local officials, the review process is nearing completion. As always, we will be monitoring closely for any changes.
